Communication Re: Outcome Phase One
Within the scheduled timeframe, and by the due date of April 7th, 284 projects were submitted, and were examined during the last week by the individual members of the Jury. A reunion of the Jury members was held yesterday at the offices of the Bologna Association of Architects between 15:30 and 20:30 in the evening. Each Jury member presented at the meeting with a list of 10 projects which they felt were the most interesting among those submitted, and they were each amply discussed during the reunion.
The Jury was composed of the following members:
• Peter Eisemann, president (in videoconference)
• Rabbi Felipe Goodman (in videoconference)
• Simone Cola
• Francesco Evangelisti
• Victor Magiar (in videoconference)
• Gianfranco Maraniello
• Maura Pozzati
There was found to be an overall very high quality of the numerous presented projects which affronted, through very different approaches, a theme both complicated by its relation to the objective of the competition and in relation to the area proposed for the realization of the memorial.
In particular, it must be mentioned, that the projects discussed the most, from which were chosen those moving onto the second phase, proposed concepts most capable of uniting the need to realize an urban monument which evokes The Shoah and the contextual necessity to consider an urban fragment connected, albeit in a discontinuous manner, to important city hubs and the city’s infrastructure.
With respect to the projects selected to move on to the second phase, the Jury, in relation to the elevated number of stimulating proposals received, has agreed to increase the number of projects invited to participate. For this reason, the organization has therefore allocated the resources necessary to reimburse expenses of 5,000 Euros for the four projects identified by the following codes:
SHOB1909
L538146B
B70LIF39
B4R67H80
With regards to the design contents to develop for the second phase deadline the Jury, in order to carry out a comparative evaluation of the projects and in respect to the necessity that the projects developed will lead to works consistent with relation to the theme and budget established in the competition announcement, requests that:
-A clear explanation is given, in the case in which the projects did not express this in the first phase, of the projects references, not exclusively of a spatial nature, but also to the theme of the competition;
-To define in a precise manner what changes will be made to the area designated for the realization of the memorial, clarifying what will be the function and appearance at the conclusion of the project, of the spaces facing in the direction via Carracci and that facing towards the railway lines;
-To clearly spell out the modalities in which the spaces created may be used, with references as to the maintenance required by the project as well as references demonstrating that the requirement for the spaces created within the project to be safe and allow for a free fruition without the need for vigilance of said spaces;
-To prepare a technical/economic assessment with respect to the financial sustainability of the project referring, to that, which pertains to the prices inserted in the estimation of the work, using the price list of the Emilia-Romagna region downloadable in the “document” section on the site.
